One-of-a-kind golden shark discovered in Costa Rica

Last summer, a group of sport fishermen were casting lines off the coast of Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica, when one of their hooks caught a creature the likes of which no one had ever seen before: a six-foot nurse shark with white eyes and golden skin.

The awe-struck fishermen released the shark, but not before snapping a few photos to share with local scientists.

“At first, nobody could believe it. A lot of people said the picture must be manipulated,” said Daniel Aruaz Naranjo, director of Costa Rica’s Rescue Centre for Endangered Marine Species and a National Geographic Explorer.

Are you thinking of renting/buying an allotment?

Allotment rents in the UK vary significantly, causing confusion and frustration among plot-holders facing rising costs and commercial pressures.

These are some things to consider if you are considering buying an allotment:

Ownership vs. Lease: Most UK allotments are leased from councils or private landlords. Understand the terms and duration.

Waiting Lists: Popular sites may have long waiting lists. Apply early and consider multiple sites.

Rules & Restrictions: Each site has its own regulations—on sheds, greenhouses, livestock, and pesticide use.

Initial Setup Costs: Budget for tools, compost, seeds, fencing, and possibly a shed.

Initial Commitment: Allotments require regular attention. Be realistic about your availability.

Security: Check if the site is gated or has issues with vandalism or theft.

Community and culture: Some sites are social hubs, others are quiet retreats. Visit and get a feel for the vibe.

Wildlife & Sustainability: Consider organic practices, pollinator-friendly planting, and composting.

Future Plans: Think long-term—will your interest and availability remain steady?
